February Teacher of the Month: Jill McKinnon

Each month, Marshall ISD celebrates the outstanding contributions of our campus faculty to the overall educational experience of our students. These professionals work countless extra hours at home, on weekends, and over holiday breaks with one focus in mind -- to make MISD and their campus Marshall Proud and Maverick Strong for our students.

The Teacher of the Month for February 2018 at William B. Travis Elementary School, as selected by Principal, Mr. Loyed Jones, is Jill McKinnon, Third Grade Teacher!

"Mrs. McKinnon is committed to student outcomes and performance," said Mr. Jones, in his nomination of McKinnon. "She has been proactive in having her students participate in the AR Reading program, Read-To-Ride program, and heavy use of the library to select high-interest books.  She does a great job helping her students to understand the relationship between working hard and having success. She has outstanding attendance, great preparation and planning, and uses data to drive instruction."

What  do you see as your most important role as a teacher?: "Building confidence in my students, and advocating for their needs. In my co-teach class we try to make learning fun. In reading we try to instill the importance of reading, and cultivate a love for reading as well."

Who were some of the most influential teachers/educators in your life?
"I feel my most important role as a teacher is to teach them the love of reading. I wasn’t one that always loved to read. However, I feel if I can use that experience to push students to read, they will discover the wonderful world of books."

What do you enjoy the most about teaching specifically at William B. Travis? "I love to see the students when the “light bulb comes on” or when they make that first 100 on their test."

What are some things you hope to accomplish in your career? Future plans?: "I plan to teach as long as I possibly can and love the classroom setting, so I hope to stay right where I am. However, my dream is to teach in a tropical location near the ocean."
